Over the last decade, the consequences of low health literacy have emerged as a major public health issue in the United States because of their devastating effect on the nation's overall health and health care systems. From the first published paper in 1990 to the Institute of Medicine's groundbreaking report on health literacy in 2004, hundreds of articles have been published on the subject of health literacy. This issue now is taking center stage in the nation's health care dialogue and debate.
