Annals of Family Medicine: Quick Assessment
of Literacy in Primary Care: The Newest Vital
Sign
The Newest Vital Sign (NVS) is Pfizer's latest contribution to the field of clear
health communication. It is a rapid health literacy assessment tool with advantages
over previously available tests. The NVS can be administered in approximately 3
minutes and is the only such tool available in English and Spanish.
Research conducted by University of Arizona and University of North Carolina, with
funding from Pfizer, validated the NVS against the TOHFLA and demonstrated that
the assessment could be conducted in approximately three minutes. This research
was published in the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Family Medicine (November/December
2005).
